Miles & Miles
I went running on the 23rd December with Jamie (who is super fit). I lead the way (to keep Jamie from running me into the ground) and managed about 6 – 6.5 miles in about 50 minutes which is not too bad. I then get out of bed at 07:00 on the 28th Dec to run with Bunde and managed a bit further with a time of exactly 1 hour – tired but happy. Bunde has come up with a plan to get me up to 2 hours within 6 weeks – add 10 minutes per week to the weekend run (about 1.25 miles I reckon at the moment) a break after 3 weeks and 1:30 followed by 10 min increases for another 3 weeks. We’ll see how it goes.

I was reminded on Sunday that it’s 16 weeks to go to the Ashby 20 2009 race, will I be up for it? Monday I went out and ran 20 laps of the rec at the usual speed and I was knackered.
Today I went out and only had time for 10 laps – still tiring but I’m feeling good while running.
I was signed off from Physio last Friday pm so I just have to get the ok from the consultant this Friday am and I can pick up the pace/distance (hopefully),

I managed to get out at lunchtime in between the icy showers that were lashing down around that time.
I managed 15 laps of the rec today hence the 50% Extra but they weren’t free – the last 2 laps were hard work and it was a struggle to keep going but I did and it’s done now so onwards and upwards…..

As I was working from home today I took the opportunity to load a backpack with 20 lbs of weight to get the feel of it and I’ve been sat coding away with the backpack on – shoulders and back are feeling it – how am I going to get round?
Same route as Monday, same kind of pace and an accurate count of 10 laps resulted in a a time of about 18 minutes. I think this means that my previous sessions have been either slower or further – I’ll take further
.
As I read this back, there’s one thing I must get in my head.

As a Visual Studio deveoper, are you fed up, when developing client/service solutions, with having to run one half of it in VS and the other as an .exe?
If so, I discovered today that you can now specify multiple startup projects and here’s how. Select the solution, right click and choose Set Startup Projects. Click the Multiple Startup Projects button and set which projects you want to start up with/without debugger.
Nice.

Managed another basic training session yesterday – mountain bike to the local rec ground and 10 (maybe 11, I lost count again – I’m out of practice and out of oxygen
) laps of the ground at the samer pace as previously. Back onto the bike and cycled home the long way round – without Ewan McGregor and mate.
My legs are feeling fine today so maybe some progress but still the same question haunts me? How will I get round 10 miles with 35lbs on my back?

Basic training started today……… well sort of.
As the P Company Challenge (Paras 10) requires ankle support boots and a bergen I asked Jamie if he could loan me a pair of his boots (we have the same size feet). Jamie brought a pair of boots to try for size but they were too small so I nipped along to the local surplus supply stores to have a look at what they had. A pair of German Para boots of the right size were £25 and a bergen was the same price. I decided that as I hadn’t tried the weight or started any training I’d wait before I bought them.
Back home Jamie got a "Geek Backpack" (I think I got this from the Windows Server Launch – 2002 in Seattle) and packed it with an assortment of dumbell weights and cans of Strongbow Cider until he got it to around the 35lb mark. I put it on my back and the initial reaction was unprintable – I was glad I hadn’t bought the kit. I took the backpack round to Bunders and his reaction was similarly unprintable. We thought the pack was heavier than his youngest daughter :-). We spent a few minutes discussing whether we were mad to attempt this and decided that with the correct backpack style and an early start on the training we would be fine………..
I went back home and got on my mountain bike, cycled to the local rec ground and set off to run laps of the pitch. I ran 10 (maybe 11, I lost count) laps of the ground at a pace of about 2 minutes per lap so I reckon on that being about 2 miles or so at a pace of 8 minute miles – a time I was more than comfortable with before my knee injury. Back onto the bike and cycled home.
8 hours later and my legs are feeling tired, stiff and sore. After 2 miles? How will I get round 10 with 35lbs on my back?

As described elsewhere even though I have a place in the London Marathon 2009, I’m unlikely to be taking part due to my knee op. It will just be too soon for me to get back in to shape (I’m sat at home sipping beer and eating doughnuts whilst I should be out running) and I’ve decided to to aim for something a little later in the year in September. The event I’m looking at is the Paras 10.
The Paras 10 is, as you would expect, a 10 mile run that takes place in the area around Catterick. The event is described on the web site as a "multi-terrain endurance event" and actually comprises of 2 races ran over the same course at the same time on the same day. 2 races ran on the same course, at the same time on the same day? How can it be 2 races? Well, one is comprised of runners running in the traditional runners kit of shorts, t-shirt and trainers and the other (which I’m aiming to take part in) is ran in military style boots with full ankle protection and a 35 pound pack strapped to your back. Rcae 2 is called is "P Company Challenge" and while you can run it at any pace you like there is a "qualifying" time of 1 hr 50, which with the 35 pound weight is going to be quite a challenge – mind you I already have a fair bit of weight strapped round the front :-).
Training for real is likely to start on the 1st weekend of January, thereby giving me about 8 months to shed the pounds and get back to fitness but I’m looking to get a loaded backpack on my back next weekend just to see what the weight is like.
I’ll document the trials and tribulations of training for this as I meet, and go past them, right here in this P Company Challenge thread.

My last physio session (where I did single leg presses) revealed that my right leg has only half the strength of my left leg – and I’m right legged. Measuring my thighs showed that my right thigh was about 2cms thinner than my left thigh – I’m told that I need to work my right leg to build it back up before attempting running as I’ll only hurt myself. To build up my right leg my physio has given me an exercise regime which consists of :
- one legged squats
- one legged cycling
- one legged rowing machine
- right leg forward lunges
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve managed to get out on my mountain bike 4 / 5 times. None of it has been too strenuous but my knee is definitely making progress in it’s recovery. I’m still not going to make the London Marathon next April (although I haven’t cancelled yet) and I’ve decided on a different challenge for next year – see new Blog thread – P Company Challenge for more details.

The latest CRM Accelerator "Event Management" has been released to CodePlex. It allows you to use CRM to handle three aspects of Events, planning, attendance and review.
I’ve downloaded this but only and got half way into the installation/setup…….
