So we got the new hardware delivered from SBS Live.  It was installed with Small Business Server 2003 R2 Premium with MS SQL 2005 and MS Reporting Services.

First job was to run CRM installer and see what was required.  CRM required MSSQL 2005 SP2 installign before it would contemplate installing.  As the new server had no internet connection at this point, I had to download SP on another PC and transport it via a usb hard drive.

I ran the .exe from the USB drive and an error message was displayed along the lines of – drive or disk may not be available or insufficient permission.  I tried again by copying the .exe from the USB harddisk to the desktop and executing from there – same error.

I rang SBS live to check my account level and confirmed that I was domain admin.  So no joy.  I tried downloading the SP again and retried the above with the same result.  I Googled for the error and found many reasons for this from dodgy .exe to ASP.Net not being installed correctly.

I navigated my way through the MS partner portal, through partner source and discovered that there is a hotfix for the SP that is not on general release which needs to be requested from MS via a web form – takes up to 8 hours for you to get the email response, I sent a request via the web site and tried calling MS but it was getting towards the end of day and I couldn’t get through.

Anyway, as I write this my email has arrived and I’m downloading a link with a 100Mb hot fix attached – now that’s a hot fix!

I’ll install the hotfix tomorrow and update this entry tomorrow night – hopefully CRM will be in place and up and running.

This might be worth a read by anyone facing the threat of redundancy at Capital One

I got back from spectating at the London Marathon about 17:15 last night.  There were 3 friends running it this year and they all did really well – Dav – 2:33, Jerry 3:00:15 and Bunder – 3:39:50, with Bunder raising a couple of thousand quid for his efforts and the charities CLIC and MacMillan Cancer.

Here’s a photo of Bunder on the Embankment, running so fast I nearly missed him, he’s wearing the green thsirt and white shorts and is just on the left of the policeman.

It tipped it down with rain at about 11:00 and we were all soaked and freezing cold but it was still a great event.  We spotted our runners at the 13 mile stage (just over Tower Bridage) and again at the 25 mile mark on the Embankment.  It was while watching the runners go past us on the Embankment that I decided that after 2 years of spectating the event, I was going to run it again.  At the finish, to the strains of Heather Small Proud, which gives me goosebumps, I announced to all that I’d be running next year and Bunder immediately agreed to do it again – he’s done 5 already.

So today sees the start of "Wors Workout" – the aim is to drop a couple of stones, get back to 2005 levels of fitness asap and beat my 2005 time of 4:09.  Having made this rather public statement, I’ve just been weighed at 188lb!!!! – the heaviest I’ve ever weighed in my life, and I now need to go collect my running shoes from Adrians house and get started sometime today (I’ll just have another biscuit).

I’ve just made my application through the London Marathon online ballot:

Thank you for entering the Flora London Marathon 2009
online entry ballot

You will find out if you have been successful when you receive either your Accepted or Rejected magazine in early October 2008 (or when you log back into this website, again in early October). However, if you need to contact the organisers at any point, please call 020 7902 0200 and quote the reference number 1x9x16x.

If I’m not succesful in the ballot, I have to decide if I’ll run for a charity place, but I’ve got ’til early October to decide.

I’ll keep you posted…..

Here’s how our cress ended up:

and the empty space that the harvesting of it leaves in our lives

The good news is that it made absolutely top notch egg and cress sarnies – still not our own eggs yet mind.

This is likely the last you’ll see of Cress Cam……

Capital One have just announced 750 redundancies from their Nottingham operations.  750 jobs which are, I believe, being offshored to India.  One of the areas affected by the redundancies is where WP works – Fraud.  They don’t know exactly who’ s going yet so it’s an ucertain time for her and me.

In what I think is an incredible statement, the head honcho at Cap One (Srini Gopalan, senior vice president and head of UK business at Capital One in Nottingham) said to those being made redundant:

"Focussing on business efficiency is not new for us. We?ve been leveraging outsourcing, making process improvements, and reducing costs for many years. These were significant efforts, and we pulled them off thanks to the hard work of our associates."

In other words, thanks for all the hard work you all put in getting us to a position where we can make even more of you redundant!  I’m left speechless (but thankfully not typeless(?)) by this heard and these same thanks only 2 months ago up the road at Experian.

What with Experian making 240+ redundant in January,Cap 1 with 750 (and others unnamed here), Nottingham has lost around 2,000 jobs in a number of months.  Where are those 2,000 people going to find work as all jobs are being shipped overseas to (allegedly) cheaper resources.  Can UK PLC sustain this offshoring off jobs and loss of wealth?  Who knows, more importantly who cares? (Do you?)

As one wag on www.thisisnottingham.co.uk put it – "What’s in your wallet? – a P45

I thought I’d just have a look at the Cap 1 web site and stumbled over their careers pages.  I’ll capture this for posterity:

IT

Our IT team caters for the technology needs of the entire business. As a consequence, all of our team associates, even the most junior, enjoy a lot of day-to-day variety and are constantly challenged.

We are a large consumer of technology because of our Information Based Strategy. Our associates in IT tend to fall into one of two camps. First there are technical specialists, for example developers, in technology operations where we manage our internet sites and ensure the company’s servers keep running smoothly. Second, we have IT Business managers, such as Business Systems Analysts or Data Analysts who have a very close working relationship with other areas of the business, in particular within the marketing & operations departments. We ensure that IT stays aligned to the day-to-day goals of the business and also that our associates are realistic about how technology can help them achieve their targets.

Our culture encourages cross-departmental working and that’s certainly true in IT. As the vast majority of business decisions touch on IT, associates in this department are constantly collaborating with associates from other departments. Therefore, our IT jobs suit people who prefer a role which balances business and IT rather than a purely technical position.

We are renowned for the high calibre graduates we attract into our IT department. In order to thrive here you will be blessed with intelligence, good problem solving abilities, bags of energy and effective interpersonal skills.

My highlights not theirs.  I suppose it’s to be expected that the web site is still singing the praises of Cap 1 as an employer after the redundancy announcement – all the IT staff will be in the Canal House until very late tonight.

As requested by my army of avid blog reders, here’s a height check on the cress.  In this picture I’ve illustrated the height of the cress by utilising the amazing height indicating powers of the humble patio door key.
