I went last Friday to see the knee man with the MRI Scan results, it wasn’t the best of news:

I’ve bruised my lower leg bone inside my knee joint/cap which will take a long, long time to heal and I’ve got a small fracture of the knee cap.  The fracture is like a flap and there is a danger of it breaking off completely leaving me with an increased chance of arthritis in that knee cap.  The man gave me 2 choices:

1. Wait another 4 weeks or so before running (on the basis that there has been some improvement over the last 3 or 4 weeks without running.
2. Have a simple op to put a small cut at the four "corners" of the kneecap and insert a camera for a "looksee"
2.1 If the fracture is not a danger to flake off then leave it all as it – 1 stitch in each hole
2.2 If the fracture is a danger to flake off then a small screw with a thread on each end can be inserted through my skin in through the flap and into the main kneecap.  The screw will hold the fracture in place and prevent it dropping off.

The recovery time for option 2 is 4 – 7 days before I was walking properly again and 3 – 4 weeks before I can drive long distances (150 miles +).

As I’m nearing the end of a computer contract and I’m likely to need to be able to drive long distances I’ve decided to go with the wait and see approach.  I’ll go another 4 weeks without running (cycling on the flat or swimming is ok) and see how it is after that.  If there is no marked improvement then I’ll get on with the op.

Here’s hoping…….

I’ve just been for an MRI scan on my right knee.  The scan took place in the back of a lorry in the hospital car park and it about 20 minutes.  As the scanner is very noisy you’re issued with headphones and local radio is played through them.  For 20 minutes it was both loud, noisy and boring – due to the radio show being "Jo & Twiggy" on Trent FM .

If I didn’t have to keep still I would have removed the headphones and listened to the horrendous noise made by the MRI scanner.

Anyway, the scan results will be winging their way to my knee consultant and I’ll be having an appointment to see him in the near future.

We’ve decided to reclaim some of the garden from the chickens and have penned them an area of about 18m * 12m with mesh and wooden posts.  The fence is 0.9 metre high and "chicken proof".

This morning when Wor Pet went out to see them, one of the chickens took a run towards her and half jumped and half flew clean over the fence!  We’ve put it back and there’s been no reoccurrence so we’re hoping it’s a one off.

Chickens seem to be very much in a grass is greener on the other side mode – when they have plenty of food they still dash to us when we are in the garden i the hope that they will get something better to eat.  Now deprived of the whole garden, they have taken to patrolling up and down the fence, occassionally poking their heads through the gap in an attempt to get the greener grass that’s on the other side.

I attended a session with a knee specialist on Friday morning.  He gave me a quick examination and reckoned he could feel something loose to the top and right of my of my right kneecap – the place that feels constantly bruised.  He also felt and heard the clicking that goes on when my right knee is bent.

I went for a couple of x-rays to see what they revealed which was nowt.

I’m now teed up for an MRI this Thursday to reveal more.

The chickens have turned in to egg laying superstars, laying an egg a day each.

Event with our son here to help out we have too many eggs for us so we’re handing some out to the neighbours in egg boxes that Tracey has saved for this very purpose.  I’ve knocked up a quick label for the egg boxes (I have way too much time on my hands)

What do you reckon?  How about an advertising strapline "Go to work on a Woes" (for those old enough to remember the old egg advert :-))

I’m nearly half way through the second week of my enforced running lay off.  I’ve organised to see an orthopod on Friday about my knee and hopefully start on the road to find out what’s going on with it.  The good news is that my knee appears to be getting a bit better due to the layoff so maybe it’s not as bad as I think – I’ll find out soon hopefully.

Whilst out enjoying the sunshine (and a couple of beers) I was talking to a mate who told me that the chickens that we have are a breed called Warrens.  They are a hybrid bred specially for battery egg production – the 4 we have are living a much better life in our garden than any battery hen.  The feathers are shining and some that were missig when we first got them have grown back.  All in all they are very happy chickens and a happy chicken lays eggs

I visited the Doc on Tuesday and was given some exercises to carry out to attempt to strengthen my right thigh which the Doc reckons is the cause of the knee problems.  I don’t hold out much hope for this though I continue to carry out squats from a straight backed chair and step up and down the stair.  I’ll give this a couple of weeks to see how it goes then I’ll be looking for something a bit more scientific than his cursory examination.

I managed to run on Thursday and early Saturday am but both times caused my left leg to tire easily as it’s doing all the work and then my left achilles started to complain so I’ve decided to give up running for the next 2 weeks in an effort to give my knees and achilles time to heal.

I said when I started this blog that it was going to be a long road back, I never knew how long though ….. 😦

All 4 chickens are now laying so we have more eggs than you can shake a stick at (what the hell does that saying really mean?).

Even if they weren’t laying they are a great laugh.  They have a completely pavlovian reponse to the sound of the kitchen door and garden gate and it makes me howl when I see them racing up the garden when ever they hear the kitchen door closed or the back gate open.

Finally got our hands on one of these last week and I had a go at hula hooping, ski jumping/slalom etc. and it seems great fun.  Next morning my right knee was a bit sore but not too bad.  I went to work in Edinburgh from Wednesday night ’til Friday and my knee felt swollen and a bit sore.  Running a littel over 5 miles with Bunder on Saturday afternoon and my knee was very swollen and sore.  Saturday night I managed to hurt it more as I turned round with my right foot planted resulting in what felt like my knee cap becoming dislocated (it hadn’t).

By Sunday morning my knee was up like a balloon and I’m having to think about getting some medical advice as I can’t put up with this every time I use the Wii!
