2 chickens are now laying and the first egg has been cooked and eaten – Tracey reports that it was delicious (a double yoker) although she felt a bit odd eating it – that’ll soon go away I’m sure.

While I was in Edinburgh and Tracey and Laura were in London the chickens were being looked after by neighbours. Tracey and Laura arrived back home on Friday afternoon and found that the chickens had pulled one back – laying an egg sometime either Thursday or Friday. When she told me I was intially sceptical about it wondering if our neighbours were setting us up for a laugh and when we looked in the coop this morning to find that they hadn’t laid suspicions were raised, however, 5 minutes later, Tracey noticed that one of the chickens had returned to the nets and was making a bit of a racket. When it emerged a look inside confirmed that it was indeed the chickens that had laid the egg.
The 2 eggs that they have laid are fairly small compared to supermarket eggs but Tracey can confirm that they taste great

An unexpected opportunity to be at home on Monday allowed me the opportunity to go for a run with Bunder. About 4 miles around the res and back escapign the rain again. Although my legs were slightly tired after Thursday and Sundays efforts things are getting better on the running front.
Woo Hoo!

I ran for about 6 miles along the canal at Langley Mill on Sunday morning with Mark. It stayed dry for most of the way – which was nice
. The time was about 52 minutes – which was also nice

The Finchs are now up to 4 eggs whilst the chickens remain on 0. The Finchs are running away with the title of "Most Prolific Egg Layers In Our Home 2008" and are currently looking like a shoe in for the prestigious "Golden Egg 2008" awards which will be presented later in the year from the back room of our house.
I’m still leading the chickens in every day to say "Look, look at what these are doing!" bu tto no avail. We continue to wait……..

This is weird. The chickens are turning into family pets. A bit like dogs they hang around the table (in the garden) when I’m eating – looking up hungrily (or so it seems) while I eat anything from toast to pizza. They are no longer as timid but they do still allow me to herd them into the coop without drama. They are also putting themselves to bed (perch) as the sun goes down. If they are roaming outside of the coop they head back in and up the ramp they go – the first one goes, one follows, up goes the 3rd then the 4th one suddenly makes a run for. I wonder if it feels vulnerable as the only chicken in the garden?
It seems very weird having chickens roaming around my back garden but not as weird as seeing my dad rounding up chickens in the garden
. I asked him if he ever thought he’d be a chicken shepherd – "Never" was the answer. He did a great job and they were rounded up in no time.
